Frost Without Snow and Ice
An intimate documentary on the changing Arctic, told through the eyes of the mother polar bear Frost
For over ten years, Norwegian filmmaker Asgeir Helgestad followed the polar bear Frost on Svalbard. His footage reveals the raw beauty of the Arctic landscape, but also the dramatic consequences of climate change, which increasingly threatens the animals' survival.
In "Frost Without Snow and Ice", Asgeir Helgestad had the privilege of witnessing seven of Frost's cubs enter the world amidst the breathtaking Arctic wilderness. Meeting the polar bear and watching how tenderly she cared for her young touched him deeply and held him spellbound. Frost is at home in this harsh environment, the first polar bear in recent memory to establish her territory close to human settlements. Helgestad never forgot Frost; she was the main reason he returned to Svalbard year after year. Over time, his perspective shifted: from a photographer captivated by this ethereal landscape into a storyteller determined to show how human activity threatens to irreversibly transform this habitat.
