A Visual Journey Through Central Asia

Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan: Markus Eber takes us on a journey of discovery across the five former Soviet republics of Central Asia

Through photographs and video, Markus Eber recounts his nearly two-month journey across five countries that were once part of the Soviet Union and are now forging their own paths between tradition, post-Soviet heritage, and modernity.

The route led from the Caspian Sea across the vast Kazakh steppes, into the snow-capped 4,000-meter peaks of the Pamir Mountains, and onward to the legendary Silk Road oasis cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva with their splendid mosques and madrasas.

At the heart of the presentation are personal impressions from a captivating world: hospitality inside yurts at over 3,000 meters altitude, daily life in remote mountain villages, but also the scars of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site and the ecological disaster of the receding Aral Sea.

Markus Eber, M.A., works as an editor. He has traveled extensively throughout the post-Soviet space, including Russia, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.
